George Bebis is currently a professor and a Graduate Coordinator in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Nevada, Reno. He received his BS and MS degrees from the University of Crete (Computer Science) in 1987 and 1991, and his Ph.D. degree from the University of Central Florida (Electrical Engineering) in 1996. His research interests are in computer vision, image processing, pattern recognition, machine learning, and evolutionary computing. The key objective of my research is to build intelligent systems that can sense and understand the world surrounding us. In this respect, he has been developing systems that can recognize 3D objects independently of their position, orientation or size, systems that can recognize people based on different types of biometrics (e.g., face, fingerprint, hand geometry), and visual surveillance systems that can track various objects (e.g., people, vehicles) and understand their activities (e.g., human activity recognition). I am the founder and director of the Computer Vision Laboratory (CVL). His work has been funded both by government and industry including National Science Foundation (NSF), NASA, Office of Naval Research (ONR), and Ford Motor Company. He is an associate editor of the Machine Vision and Applications Journal, and serves on the Editorial Board of the Pattern Recognition Journal and the International Journal on Artificial Intelligence Tools. He is the founder and main organizer of the International Symposium on Visual Computing (ISVC), has served on many national and international conference program committees, and hasorganized/chaired many conference sessions. In 2002, he received the Lemelson Award for Innovation and Entrepreneurship. He is a member of IEEE and the IAPR Educational Committee. More information about his research is available from the Computer Vision Laboratory (CVL) website at http://www.cse.unr.edu/CVL
