Sept. 30 - Oct. 3, 2009: Mahsa Maghami is attending the Grace Hopper Conference

September 30, 2009, 3:58 am

Mahsa Maghami, a Ph.D. student in ML^2, is attending the Grace Hopper conference, held in Tucson, Arizona from September 30th to October 3rd, 2009.

The Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing is a series of conferences designed to bring the research and career interests of women in computing to the forefront. Presenters are leaders in their respective fields, representing industrial, academic and government communities. Leading researchers present their current work, while special sessions focus on the role of women in today's technology fields, including computer science, information technology, research and engineering.

Mahsa's presence at this conference is sponsored by the Women in Engineering (WIE) at UCF. WIE is a group of undergraduate, graduate and faculty women in engineering within the School of EECS at UCF affiliated with the IEEE Women in Engineering (WIE) group.

Anna Koufakou received a grant from USENIX for 2008 OSDI and Diversity Workshop

November 07, 2008, 09:45 am

Anna Koufakou, a Ph.D. student at the ML2, is the recipient of a grant from the USENIX Association. The grant is to help Anna attend the 8th USENIX Symposium on Operating Systems Design and Implementation OSDI 2008, and the Diversity Workshop to be held December 7 - 10, 2008 in San Diego, CA.
http://www.usenix.org/events/osdi08/osdi08.html

The first Workshop on Supporting Diversity in Systems Research is a community-building event, serving both to educate women and under-represented minorities about the opportunities in systems research and to support researchers who are already working in the field. The workshop will include a range of panel sessions and presentations by leading researchers from academia and industrial labs. The program will focus on information and advice specific to systems research, covering topics in crafting a successful research career, from identifying important problems to building a successful career in academia or in an industrial research lab. Presentations will target early-career researchers and under-represented minority and women students at the graduate and senior undergraduate levels who have interests in systems research. The workshop will also serve as a friendly networking opportunity for members of the community to meet each other before attending the OSDI '08 conference.

John Reeder is presenting a paper at AIIDE, 2008, October 22-24

October 21, 2008, 08:31 pm

John Reeder is presenting a paper at the AIIDE conference, October 22-24, Stanford University.

The paper, titled, Intelligent Trading Agents for Massively Multi-player Game Economies, is co-authored by Gita Sukthankar, Michael Georgiopoulos and Georgios Anagnostopoulos.

Title: Intelligent Trading Agents for Massively Multi-player Game Economies

Abstract: As massively multi-player gaming environments become increasingly detailed, developing agents to populate these virtual worlds as capable, autonomous, non-player characters poses a daunting research problem. Human players in many games must achieve their objectives through financial skills such as trading and supply chain management as well as through combat and diplomacy. In this paper, we examine the problem of creating intelligent trading agents for virtual markets. Using historical data from EVE Online, a science fiction based MMORPG, we evaluate several strategies for buying, selling, and supply chain management. We demonstrate that using reinforcement learning to determine policies based on the market microstructure gives trading agents a competitive advantage in amassing wealth. Imbuing agents with the ability to adapt their trading policies can make them more resistant to exploitation by other traders and capable of participating in virtual economies on an equal footing with humans.

Anna Koufakou will attend the 2008 Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing

September 23, 2008, 06:23 am

Anna Koufakou, a Ph.D. student at the ML2, is going to attend the 2008 Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing, to be held at the Keystone Resort, Colorado, October 1-4, 2008. Anna will volunteer as a Hopper.

The Grace Hopper Celebration is one of the largest gatherings of technical women in the world. Women come together to learn about the latest technology, learn new skills to enhance their careers, and build their network. It was co-founded by Dr. Anita Borg and Dr. Telle Whitney in 1994, inspired by the legacy of Rear Admiral Grace Murray Hopper.
This year's Celebration includes many events such as distinguished keynote speakers, PhD Forum, resume clinic, networking with CTOs and other networking events, ACM Student Research Competition, among others.
